Here are a few more of the haiku we composed along the way as we walked the streets of Iga Ueno:

the woman
beats her futon clean—
clouds coming in

—Penny Harter

a motorcycle boy
roars through the middle:
autumn ginko

—Penny Harter

the hototogisu
flowers' lavender
under Iga skies

—William J. Higginson
Note on the haiku at left: Bill prefers the Japanese name of the plant, hototogisu, after the "lesser cuckoo"—a bird whose shape and stripes the flowers somewhat resemble—to the plant's English name, "toad lily"! But no, the bird's not lavender. Here's an excellent photo of the plant by a Japanese photographer who calls herself "Ariari" (and here's her homepage on Flickr).
