“Butterfly Dreams:
The Seasons through
Haiku and Photographs”
This slide-show and talk introduces “Butterfly Dreams”—the new electronic book combining striking nature photographs by Michael Lustbader with Bill's fresh translations of Japanese haiku, both traditional and modern. Three years in the making, the e-book contains 130 paired images and haiku, which can easily be viewed on a computer screen (requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader™). In addition, Bill and Michael have commented on the poems and images, giving background that will enhance readers' enjoyment of the poems and give insight into photographic techniques, both film and digital. Bill will present a selection from the work in “Butterfly Dreams” using computer-projection technology, and will give details of their collaboration, the backgrounds of the poems, and the locations and techniques involved in the photographs. Copies of the e-book will be available for sale.
Note: This event is part of the quarterly meeting of the NY-Metro Region of the Haiku Society of America, which will also feature a talk by Efren Estevez, “Troutswirl: The Nature Tradition in the Haiku of John Wills”. The meeting is open to the public. A modest donation ($5 suggested) helps defray the costs of meeting space, refreshments, and meeting notices. Poetry Night: Penny Harter Reads Recent and New Work
Penny will read from her several recent books, and new work. Her latest chapbook, Along River Road, deals with the lives and deaths of her parents, seen from the perspectives of both a child and an adult. Her forthcoming collection, The Night Marsh, explores the intersection between science and personal experience, fusing the two. Those who know her work will see these new poems as a logical expansion of her earlier work, which won the William O. Douglas Nature Writing Award for her contributions to American Nature Writing 2002.
An open mic will follow a book signing and refreshments.
